The Emmy’s Red Carpet was in full swing last night and fans oohed and aahed from the sidelines as television celebrities and more (notably Lady Gaga amongst others) preened and posed for the cameras. There were a few standouts both glam and OMG. Popular colours were nude, metallics and reds and black. Even pale yellow made an appearance. It was fun to see people taking fashion risks for a change on the carpet but not everyone got it right. Styling Diva’s picks for best and worst are:
Best Dressed: Viola Davis is my pick. She stunned in a gorgeous snow white gown of simple design with black beading at the waist. She looked cool in spite of the heat as she accepted her historic award.
Christina Hendricks simply oozed sexiness in a slinky, metallic column gown that hit her voluptuous curves in all the right places. Va-va voom were the words that came to my mind! PA-POW!
Sarah Hyland was elegant simplicity in a burgundy Zac Posen gown. She wows in the dress the perfection of which is offset in a cute way by her undone hairdo and natural looking make-up.
Other notables were Lady Gaga, who went for old Hollywood glam in a lovely one shoulder black gown by Prada and is rumoured to be getting into acting). Love her Marilyn Monroe type hairdo and soft make-up.
Edie Falco wore a pale pink, pleated front gown by Prada that was absolutely lovely and a refreshing switch from the usual red carpet fare.
Laverne Cox wore classic Calvin Klein. The back of this dress had two cut-outs and her booty was smokin’ hot in teal.
Joanne Froggatt wore a pretty blush pink and black gown with a structured bodice. Tres chic!
Padma Lakshmi wore a glowing golden gown that fit her like a glove.
Laura Carmichael was fresh in a fashion forward design by Erdem, one of my favorite designers.
Kerry Washington wore a Marc Jacobs design silver metallic mid length gown with a gladiator style hem that dazzled.
Jane Krakowski stood out in a Bibhu Mohopatra gown in blush with black accents at the neckline…or is that a wine glass?!
Lena Headey impressed in a burgundy Zac Posen gown that was covered in a fine netting of sparkling crystals all the way to the floor!
Emma Roberts was creamy perfection in the palest shade of blush. A flowing gown by Jenny Packham suited her fair skin and old Hollywood glam hair to perfection.
Sofia was gorgeous as usual in a metallic column gown by St. John. I think she has her look down pretty pat.
Christine Marzano was one of the biggest fashion risk takers in this unusual gown by Labourjoisie. Cut outs in all the right places. Love it!
Worst Dressed; Heidi Klum. Perhaps this dress looked better in person but from most angles it appeared to be a mishmash and mismatched disaster. On one side she appeared to be wearing a mini dress with a nightgown and half a housecoat on her other side. The colour washes her out. It literally looked as if someone tore her housecoat half off her body and that was what she had on underneath.
My runner up for worst dressed, sadly there were many to choose from, is Claire Danes. Although the chain accents were very cool, the neckline of her gown did not suit her at all and the low cut sides just give the impression that the whole thing has been stretched downward and sags. Not a flattering cut on her thin figure. I’m not loving the rest of the dress either, the colour is ho-hum. Nothing that stands out for the right reasons.
Joanna Newsom wore a design by Delpozo. Love the color but is that a chair back stuck to her chest?!
Ellie Kemper wore a dress by Naeem Khan. I am not feeling the seventies vibe at all.
Laura Prepon stunned in Christian Siriano but I think this dress would be nicer without the odd coloured bolero.
Kathryn Hahn takes a fashion risk in a design by Vivienne Westwood. I think this dress would have been nicer if the designer had stopped one ruffle short of making it look like curtain material. What do you think?
Danielle Brooks looks refreshing in the colours of this Christian Siriano design but frankly, it reminds me a bit of a flag. I am not loving it.
Not everyone can wear Marchesa. Julienne underwhelms in this fussy design that would be better suited to a more voluptuous figure.
Judith Lights Zac Posen design is too casual for the red carpet with the navy blue blouse on top. Looks like a skirt and top, not an evening gown for a gala.
Retta wore a pretty Jaime Elyse dress but the designer should have stopped short of the hot pink champagne bubbles on the hem.
I am not sure if I love or hate this dress by Jun Escario. It is really different, that is for sure. Perhaps it would look nicer on someone with more curves?
The jury is still out on Nazanin Boniadis dress as well. Too much going on I think.
Yikes! Kathy Bates wears a garbage bag to the Emmys!
Keltie Knight wore an interesting design by Elie Saab but the colours are too somber for the red carpet!
Chelsea Peretti showed up in this design by Gabriela Peretti. She looks as if she is being engulfed by hostile plant life.
…and last but not least, my runner up for worst dressed is Erica Schmidt. Pete Dinklage looks great but where did you get this shirred monstrosity? Looks like a zip up muu muu.
Stay tuned for upcoming award ceremonies and red carpet reviews!
