All hail to the mighty Oscars! The red carpet lead-up to the Academy Awards ceremony was overflowing with all our favorite celebrities dressed to impress. Fashion at the 2015 Oscars was a dizzying display of top designer talent and a few new designers as well. Red and also cream gowns seemed to be popular on the carpet. Many were belted. There were some standouts but in general the theme for most celebrities was toned down and simple. A few exquisite designer gowns (Lady Gaga, Scarlett Johansson) were totally ruined by the wrong accessories. Read on for more fashion fun as Styling Diva reviews Oscar red carpet arrival fashion…
A stunning Vivienne Westwood gown on Zendaya. This is Vivienne Westwood done right! Love the draping effect and the shoulders which are so totally on trend. Even the colour is lovely. A barely there, blush pink that shimmers against her beautiful skin. Gorgeous but simple hair, jewelry and nude clutch. The only thing I don’t like here are the creases at the bottom of the dress…some fabrics you just can’t sit down in which makes it hard to get from point A to B in a limo.
Zoe Saldana was the image of sophisticated perfection in a nude gown by Atelier Versace with a crossover draping effect at the hips. Some did not like the spaghetti straps, I kind of do because it makes the dress different. She added a statement choker and upswept hair. I spot a few creases here as well.
Rosamund Pike blew me away in this smoldering red lace stunner from Givenchy. She’s my best-dressed. Love the unusual scalloped neckline and bow-tie detail at the waist with classic, column outline. The strappy sandals pick up the ribbon belt. Minimal hair, make-up and jewelry let the dress shine.
Rita Ora wore a stunning navy blue gown from Marchesa with gold accents and a huge mermaid tail train. I’m loving her look especially her earrings which look vintage. This dress oozes old Hollywood glamour!
Jennifer Lopez looked like a queen in this beautiful gown from Elie Saab. It’s almost the exact colour of her skin. Not so sure I’m loving the pink lip though.
Felicity Jones was one of the risk takers on the carpet last night. She wore a pearl gray gown from Alexander McQueen featuring the new high neckline and a very full skirt, while she still payed homage to the bare shoulders trend. This gown was quite lovely in an understated and very elegant kind of way.
Dakota Johnson was elegant simplicity in a sizzling hot red number by Saint Laurent. Love the one shoulder embellishment and understated jewelry and hair.
Scarlett Johansson wore an awesome gown by Versace. The beauty of this gown was ruined by the accessory neckpiece, which somewhat resembled seaweed constricting around her throat but apparently IS part of the gown. This green neckpiece was WAY too much. It detracted from the beautiful simple lines of this gown on her gorgeous body. Pine green is a bit of a dowdy colour on the carpet but she still pulled it off in style. I would have rather seen no neckpiece and perhaps a simple clean line of diamonds around her neck to really sparkle!
Keira Knightley was all sweetness and boho chic as she showed off her baby bump in this lovely statement gown by Valentino. Love the scalloped bodice edge over the fluffy skirt. I also like the floral print and writing on the skirt although I wish I could read what it says! Again, the nude colour is perfect against her dark hair and skin. Very original and pregnancy appropriate for the Oscars! Best dressed nominee!
Kelly Osbourne stuns in this incredibly lovely gown by Rita Vinieris. Love the way the high low hemline is done. The lace crewneck and sleeves add some spice. Her clutch is adorable. Her sandals although very appropriate, expose her ink, which should give everyone reason to reconsider tattoos, as they detract from the full effect of this lovely design on her.
I just loved Jamie Chung’s sparkling ‘fireworks’ gown on the red carpet. It was delicate and pretty on her. The design almost looked as if she were nude underneath with strategically placed glitter, yet somehow she still managed to look sweet and girly.
So happy to see Jennifer Aniston taking risks on the red carpet. This gorgeous Versace gown is sleek, modern and fits her like a glove. I would have liked to have seen her hair up for this event.
Lupita Nyong’o was glowing in a very unusual pearled gown by Calvin Klein. There is just something about the way this girl holds herself that others should take lessons from!
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a pale pink column gown from Ralph and Russo. A lot of people didn’t like the floral detail at the shoulder. I kind of like it. I think without it the dress would be boring and it’s very well done. Not floppy and looks like a delicate rose on her shoulder. Love the earrings and hair.
Reese Witherspoon wowed us in Tom Ford but what happened to her make-up? She looks like she has dark circles around her eyes. Her handler should have straightened the line across the top of the bodice before she hit the carpet.
Margot Robbie underwhelmed us in this long sleeved dress by Saint Laurent. Although she looks lovely in it, there’s really nothing outstanding about this gown that makes it Oscar-worthy. That statement choker was the best thing about her look…love!
Look how gorgeous Octavia Spencer’s Oscar gown is! A chilly ice blue it flattered her figure in all the right places. Here again we see the draping trend and exposed shoulders. Love the beautiful floatiness of this gown with the blue details on the train. I’m not loving her hair, it’s too severe and she doesn’t look very happy for some reason.
Behati Prinsloo wore a bizarre Armani Privé gown with red crusted jewels glittering on a black, somewhat sheer background. The gown was cute but it was a fashion forward choice and she really stood out. I think her hair is very unflattering in this scraped back style. All I can see are her ears sticking out. Her giant ‘ball bearing’ choker is ugly. I’m not getting the mesh overlay to the skirt either…looks like an onion bag lol she must have been getting hooked up on stuff all night!
Queen Oprah reigned on the red carpet in a wonderfully soft, Vera Wang nude coloured gown which was the perfect colour against her lovely skin. She kept make-up and jewelry simple like a real red carpet pro!
Alberta Ferrera’s stunning sea green gown was by Jenny Packham. I’m not a fan of unsupported decolletage and this dress is no exception. The saggy under bodice is saved by a beautiful sheer overlayer that offers some modesty if no support.
Sienna Miller wore Oscar de la Renta. I’m not loving it. There’s too many different fabrics and too many bows. I dislike the lace hemline. It doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the dress. Cute but not an Oscar’s gown.
Jennifer Hudson showed everyone how it’s done in this butter yellow creation with an angular, flat, peplum and tiny gold belt by Romona Keveza. Her glowing complexion and make up were perfection with this gown resulting in simple, classy, Oscar glamour.
Jessica Chastain wore a deep royal blue Givenchy gown with an unusual and somehow unflattering neckline. I dislike the black sparkles against the blue and the double strap line. Her collar, hair and make-up were sleek and minimal and gorgeous.
Anna Haris dazzled in Zuhair Murad with a silver accent belt. Her hair is a bit beachy for Oscar night.
Jenna Dewan Tatum knocks it out of the park in this white and silver Zuhair Murad, super slinky, va va voom Oscars gown. The tiny belt added some glitter at the waist.
This Miu Miu gown on Kerry Washington was elegant, yet somehow underwhelming for Oscar night. The peplum gives the effect of a skirt and top and although classic, is frankly, a bit of a yawn.
Cate Blanchett’s dress was by John Galliano. Not typical for his designs at all. A real let down. I would expect something fantastic and fairy tale like from Galliano. If it wasn’t for the turquoise necklace brightening it up this dress would be teetering on the verge of the worst dressed list. Actually, it still is!
Chrissy Teigen shines in another outstanding gown by Zuhair Murad. Belted in cool ice blue and a sexy slit that must have been giving quite the breeze to her private parts, she looks ravishing with dark lips and wavy hair.
Laura Dern really stood out in this amazing metallic gown by Alberto Ferretti. She looks like a medieval princess. Her clutch is to die for!
Faith Hill’s dress by J. Mendel was also lovely but underwhelming for the Oscars. I don’t like the very severe hair which brings our attention to her ears and the deep vee neckline makes her look very flat chested and thin. Eat a hamburger would ya?
Okay, now we get to the fashion misses on Oscar night, according to Styling Diva…
Lady Gaga wore a cutting edge white dress from Azzedine Alaia…with toilet cleaning gloves. No really?! According to media reports, the designer actually designed these gloves for her to go with the gown. Hmm. I love the gown on her, we expect her to take fashion risks. In all fairness she did not design the gloves but she or her stylist should have had the good sense not to wear them. Hair and make-up are beautiful. If the gloves had to be part of the outfit they may have been nicer in silver or white. Gotta’ say I’m NOT loving the glove trend.
Sorry, I really don’t like this checkered mess of a gown. It looks like a brick wall and then instead of wearing it daringly, barely there, she added a tube top underneath for modesty which just looks ridiculous. Definitely NOT an Oscar look.
Nicole Kidman wore a Luis Vuitton gown in a strange shade of yellowish iridescence which just totally washed her out. The red belt clashes with her dress and her hair and looks somehow out of place. Blah, blah, blah. The ‘trunk’ clutch is adorable.
As one person said on a recent fashion review show, if Chanel made you a custom gown and it looked terrible would you wear it or not wear it? Most would wear it, not wanting to insult the designer or lose a megabucks endorsement deal. I think the idea should be that the designer either gives you a choice or shows you sketches for your approval. Julianne Moore’s dress should be exquisite and yet somehow I’m not feeling the little black things in the trim on her dress. At all. Not all designer fashion is beautiful. Have the wisdom to know the difference.
I normally love Elie Saab but this dress looks like someone who had the flu sneezed all over Emma Stone. Can we say, poor choice of color?!
Yikes! What happened to Solange Knowles’ sense of style?! With the split in the pant legs and the bright pink color she looks like a walking, talking vagina!
Fashion victim lol. Lorelei Linklater tries to spice it up in this Gabriela Cadena number. She’s young and can wear anything…why did she choose this mismatched monstrosity? It looks like three different dresses sewn together as some kind of runway (or should I say….runaway) experiment. Still, she manages to look cute but there’s too much going on with this dress for her.
Gina Rodriguez wore this ultramarine gown from Manon Gabard apparently made with organic silk. Nice idea, lovely material…very blasé. I don’t see any real effort here. She could have done so much better.
Giuliana Rancic wore a cute red gown by Mireille Dagher but the appliques on the bodice and arms remind me of the ‘water lettuce’ that our mothers used to have on old style bathing caps from the 50’s.
Will.I.Am…Jailbreak anyone?
Marion Cotillard’s Dior Couture dress missed the mark. First of all, it’s just boring. Second, it looks like it was made out of swiss cheese. Definitely original but not the way you want to stand out in the crowd.
Karolina Kurkova wore a pink bed sheet to the Oscars by Marchesa. Again the scraped back hairstyle. It makes the ears stick out on everyone who wears it. Stylists need to let a few tendrils of hair loose to soften around the face.
An absolutely stunning dress on Catt Sadler by Charbel Zoe but would someone please give this poor girl a hair cut? I’m so tired of looking at limp messy locks on her and I think she should try bangs, more streaks…anything! Boring hair ruined the look here.
Didn’t catch the name of the designer of Jared Letos baby suit…maybe he left town, , lol I would. Jared manages to carry off the jacket but below the waist it goes all wrong. What is up with those drop crotch trousers? With white hospital shoes…really?!
Chloe Grace Moretz looks like she’s wearing the bedroom curtains in this dress by Miu Miu. The colour is lovely against her creamy skin. I think her make-up artist went a bit too wild with the eyebrow pencil.
