The 2015 Golden Globes were held last night in Hollywood and the stars turned out in their best designer gowns. Of note was the fact that some of the most beautiful and chic women there were well over 50. Here is a partial roundup of some of the best and worst dressed according to Styling Diva;
Julianne Moore in Givenchy – She looks stunning in a classic way. Love the way the gown fades from silver into black at the hem and the embellishment which gives it some pizzazz and takes it out of the ‘ordinary’. Love her simple hair style and minimal jewelry. This hair style or variations thereof was very popular on the red carpet last night as was the minimal jewelry theme.
Emma Stone rocks this amazing Lanvin jumpsuit with a satin sash at the waist trailing off into a train. She looks beautiful, her make up and skin are perfect, hair easygoing but cute. No jewelry as the embellishment on the top half of this gorgeous suit stands alone. Low cut black pumps complete her chic look.
Amal Clooney – in classic Dior…what can I say more? Stunning. Love the gloves and the long dangling earrings. She is already becoming a major celebrity fashion trendsetter with her elegant beauty.
Reese Witherspoon was almost poured into this glittering Calvin Klein column gown and she looks like a Goddess. Perfect unstructured wave to her hair;
Felicity Jones was demure in Christian Dior. I love the classic lines of this gown it grows on you. The color, which I found dowdy at first, matches her almost turquoise eyes and brings out a luminous glow to her skin It’s actually quite beautiful in an understated way.
Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang. I’m not quite sure what happened here when Ms. Pike decided this gown would be a good idea on the red carpet. The overall effect is one of saggy boobs. She should have had better breast support in this thing but I still don’t like the bodice design with the little string straps…looks like an over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder kind of concept to me. Other than that, her hair and make up are lovely.
Naomi Watts wore this butter yellow Gucci column dress with a draped neckline and tiny belt. Tres chic! Love the slightly off-centre diamond snake choker with this dress. The red lip adds some color.
Gina Rodriguez was styling a very sexy Badgley Mischka gown in black with an fringed, see through hemline. Her only jewelry was a pair of diamond earrings.
Amy Adams wore an ice blue/silver draped one shoulder gown. Very classic. Can’t go wrong with Versace. Statement earrings and bracelet.
Lupita Nyong’o floated onto the red carpet in another absolutely breathtaking gown that reminds me of spring flowers and lilacs. A breath of fresh air, she hits the ball out of the park again with her stand-out demure style and her beauty.
Kate Hudson slinks onto the carpet in a very ‘haut glam’ Versace gown with cutouts and glitter accenting at the waist. Her sleeked back hair is perfect here as it let’s the dress impress without distraction. This is one of my picks for favorite!
Julianna Margulies in Ulyana Sergeenko – This is awful. Looks like some kind of experiment thrown together during sewing class with material from Momma’s brocade drapes. Ugly lines, ugly shape, ugly color. Pearls only add to that impression. This is the wrong way to wear pearls btw. This dress is one of my worst-dressed candidates.
Diane Kruger nails it in this stunning silver glitter evening gown by Emilia Wickstead. The neckline and short sleeves show off her beautiful figure to the max, without actually showing anything. Yay! Class act!
Jennifer Aniston made an appearance in a black sequin topped Saint Laurent halter gown which didn’t do anything for her. Something about the glittery top and then the high, wide waist band made her look thick in the middle. She could have done so much better. I’m tired of seeing her in black too. If this is her best attempt at spicing it up it’s a fail in my book.
Lena Dunham flounced onto the carpet in a quirky red Zac Posen number that looked like a Project Runway dress gone wrong. I like the high/low hem and the fun, flirty design. The color is nice on her but the neckline seems to widen her at the shoulders and where exactly is the waistline on this dress?! Looks like someone ran wild with the zigzag setting on the sewing machine. I don’t like her hair style with the flat, plastered sideways bang. Very unflattering on her…such a shame as she has beautiful eyes and make up!
Viola Davis stunned with glowing shoulders bared in her lovely red Donna Karan Atelier gown. Love the matching lip color and sparkle embellishment at the bodice.
Allison Williams was a vision in Armani Prive with a red, layered, fairy tale floating ball gown featuring delicate sparkle embellishment. Very haut-la-la! Again, simple hair, simple jewelry.
Jessica Chastain was a sex bomb in a plunging bronze Atelier Versace halter gown. Soft and chic one sided wave hairdo with minimal jewelry. She was looking hot!
Quvenzhané Wallis was absolutely adorable in an age-appropriate but still very fashionable (and girly) gown by Armani. Love this pretty dress on her!
Amanda Peet in J. Mendel. I don’t find this floppy mess to be an appropriate get up for the awards. Okay, I get it, it’s comfortable but it’s sagging at the waist line, looks too long for her at the hem and shapeless on top. A fail in my book. Don’t like her hair but her makeup is nice…no wait, I don’t like the make up either. It’s too dark which makes her look harsh and unfeminine with this hairstyle.
Zosia Mamet wore a Zac Posen dress featuring an ugly mismatched corset type top with sagging breast cups in a beige that reminds me of my mother’s old girdles, perched atop a pink satin skirt. Ugh. Zac has so many fantastic designs…why choose one that only a runway model could pull off? She looks like she’s going to a debutante ball and had to make her own dress…using only her mother’s girdle and some pink satin drapes. Fail in my book.
Katie Holmes wowed in a rich burgundy draped Marchesa gown that really suited her pale skin and dark hair coloring. She looks clean and classy in this minimal fuss look.
Kerry Washington took a fashion risk. Do you think it’s a win? Although I love the structure on the bodice and neckline on this gown I don’t like the pink continuing down in a strip to the bottom of the skirt. I think it would have looked better if the pink ended in a point somewhere above or around the crotch area and the darker blue color took over from there. It looks awkward and very stiff in the skirt with a bizarre illusion of an hourglass figure in pink down the front. If I took this look and separated her upper body from the skirt of this dress there was real style potential there…but somehow it missed below the waistline.
Jemima Kirke showed up in a Rosie Assoulin creation. A crop top with wings and a rumpled looking maxi skirt in winter white. She looks like the Christmas angel that fell off the top of the tree.
Christine Baransky impressed me with her lovely toned arms and killer figure in this gorgeous dark red Zac Posen number with cutouts at the neckline. She looks effortless and chic.
Tina Fey was perhaps one of the biggest fashion risk takers showing up in this amazing on trend, winter white and black, Antonio Berardi design. What do you think of this dress? It’s very fashion forward but still classic and feminine. I like the shorter length which offers us a glimpse of her sexy shoes.
Dakota Johnson walked the carpet in a sleek but demure metallic Chanel mullet dress that looked literally, like mercurial quicksilver trailing behind her. Super cute! Love the embellishment on the skirt and the cute bandeau top with tiny beaded waist. She looks young, sexy and effortless.
Emily Blunt in Michael Kors. To be blunt, I love this dress, just not on Emily. I don’t know why but it seems to overwhelm her head for some reason. Classic case of the dress wearing her, not her wearing the dress. I think she needed a more dramatic hairstyle to balance the neckline or maybe she needs bangs…too much forehead, no softness around the face.
Claire Danes. Okay, I usually love Valentino. What happened here? This dress is a dreary monstrosity with a droopy, sheer black panel filling in a neckline that would have looked much less grandmotherly without it. This is my pick for worst-dressed.
Jenna Dewan Tatum – This girl has it all, the man, the looks, that dress…love the simplicity of this oh so feminine, soft yellow, Carolina Herrera gown. The red clutch pops. Note, this color is a hit on her with her dark hair. I’m not sure the effect would be as stunning on a blonde.
Patricia Arquette wore a black taffeta, one shoulder gown by Escada which flattered her skin and hair. Unfortunately, this type of material sometimes creases in the limo…
Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore a lovely white beaded Narciso Rodriguez gown with one shoulder. Her hair, make up and jewelry were beautiful. A lovely dress but for some reason the bodice seems to curve unflatteringly upward just below her breasts which kind of makes her look like she’s sporting a belly under there. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss baby bump alert?!
Maggie Gyllenhall looked very tasteful, understated and glamorous in her Miu Miu gown of rose pink satin.
Keira Knightley in Chanel. I’ve changed my mind. This is my absolute FAIL for the Golden Globes. Hate this ridiculous, frumpy looking, clown neckline. It ruins the whole dress somehow. She took a fashion risk and really blew it. The dress dates her, looks lopsided and the silly butterfly bracelet is way too much.
Anna Kendrick was timeless in a lovely flesh toned gown with glittering red beaded accents by Monique Lhuillier that complimented her fair skin and beautiful face. So pretty!
Taylor Schilling in Ralph Lauren. Love the dress, really don’t like her scraped back hair and overly red lips with it. I think she would have looked much more feminine and beautiful with long, soft waves in her hair and longer earrings.
Helen Mirren kills it in Dolce & Gabbana! Notice the long sleeves and the attractive, yet age appropriate neckline of this figure fitting dress. Helen is one hot lady who proves that older women can still bring it to the red carpet. She is one of my favorite looks at the Golden Globes for sure!
Sienna Miller in Miu Miu. This gorgeous embroidered, beaded, cream silk gown by Miu Miu was one of the loveliest at the awards. Her hair looks beautiful at this length and the plunging neckline which would be too much on a larger breasted woman is just right on her.
Jennifer Lopez wore Zuhair Murad. Although I normally love Zuhair’s designs, this one reminds me of a muu muu or a parachute with a predictably ‘down to the navel ‘ neckline. Yeah, we get it, your body is smokin’..yawn…somebody wake me up when she tries something different.
Katherine Heigl takes va va voom to a whole new level in a clean cut, form fitting, absolutely stunning, navy blue dress by Zac Posen. Love the sexy yet still demure neckline and her hair is beautiful and flowing like the dress.
Salma Hayek blew me away in Alexander McQueen…she is looking like a queen. I love the all over crumpled look of this material with the metallic accent belt, bracelet and earrings. The clutch looks like it was made for the gown. This one is definitely a fave!
Jane Fonda’s ageless sex appeal oozes in this modern design, red Versace gown with…yes!..cutouts and one sheer sleeve. Jane shows us we can look sensual, glamorous and modern at any age. Who does her hair? Love!
Camila Alves Monique Lhuillier dress was a lovely shade of blush pink. Although I like this type of draped gown I find this one looks a bit like a tablecloth she wrapped around herself when she couldn’t find her dress at the last minute. Still beautiful in it’s simplicity though.
Styling Diva picks Lupita Nyong’o and Kate Hudson for best dressed. They were both drop dead gorgeous in two totally different ways.
My worst dressed (alas…there are so many!) is Claire Danes in Valentino…what were you thinking when you chose this dowdy mess for an awards ceremony? You look like somebody’s old school grandma…no I take that back, I bet there are a lot of grandmas out there looking way hotter than this. No excuse for such an ugly gown. Keira Knightley is a close second but at least the bottom of her dress is cute, it was ruined by the top.
