Having reviewed 52 spring looks directly off the runway from several different sources, I was not surprised to see almost nothing that I would want to wear. A lot of the top designer runway looks are getting way too whacky for my taste and are teetering on the precipice of being ridiculous. However, I am not daunted by this. Sometimes if we don’t like what we see from the big designer houses we can still be on trend by incorporating pieces of fashion such as a colour, fabric or style or jewelry piece. It’s really all about individuality anyway…but within limits. I’m loving the way that designers have incorporated more than one trend into some of these garments. Fun!
So here are some of the more wearable fashion trends for spring.
- Gingham – I never thought I would see the day where I would want to wear so -called tablecloth fabric but I’ve seen this new trend looking pretty hot on more than a few runways.
Off Shoulder – This spring it’s all about the off-the-shoulder trend. Everywhere you look you will see shoulder baring designs. This is actually good news for older women…shoulders are preferable to showing the upper arm. When the shoulder is pulled down it bares the sexiest part of the arm and camoflauges the flabby parts. Alternatively, ask an expert about an exercise program to target the upper arms and get busy.
- Apron Skirting – This trend is wearable but kind of redundant. It’s like wearing two skirts, one on top of the other. Sort of stupid looking but maybe some can pull it off. I know I’m going to skip this one.
- Stripes – Bold stripes were everywhere on designs by the big fashion houses. Stripes are totally wearable. Black and white are my favorite…lol I think I have an old handbag stashed away somewhere in black and white stripes. Time to resurrect it!
- Safari – This trend is for people who like the casual, laid back, khaki look. Not my style. I like to stand out in a crowd.
- High Neckline – Well they had to do it sooner or later, everything else has already been done. Not a moment too soon for this trend with all the boob-baring necklines of the past few years. A welcome change. Yes, women can still look stunning without exposing their breasts to ogling eyes. Brings a bit of class back to fashion. I’m all for this one.
- Animal Prints – Aaaaha! I can totally ROCK animal prints and so can you! Although animal prints have been around for years, this time the trend is to unusual animal prints or bits of same incorporated into the garment in very unique ways. Keep your eyes peeled for this trend in stores.
- Coloured Suede – Suede is a chic new trend for spring with pastel hues in pink, tan and brown. Lovely, fresh and pretty…watch out for slush puddles and for Pete’s sake make sure you have a large umbrella in case it rains. Light colored suede should be thoroughly coated with rain guard before wearing. Water can and will stain it. In that regard, leave your Louis Vuitton bag at home too until the weather clears up. I speak from sad experience of being caught in an unexpected downpour.
- Denim – Perhaps one of the biggest fashion trends for spring 2015, denim takes the high road in the form of casual shirt dresses and minis, overalls and even shoes!
- Floral – Whether large or small flowers are popping up all over for spring in both bold and more delicate prints.
- Graphic – Wild graphic prints have taken the place of geometric designs. Bold and beautiful!
Ruffles – Love this trend! Ruffles are everywhere! Great for hiding lower body imperfections but it’s hard to keep from looking shapeless in them unless you are tall, so wear high heels with this look.
Fringe – Fringe is still very in as we move into spring. Appearing on skirts, dresses, coats and even bags and shoes this trend is one to embrace. Fun and flirty, fringe seduces with it’s gentle swing.
- 70’s – Sorry, been there, done that. I have no desire to revisit the 70’s or reminisce about what passed for fashion back then. If you’ve got a closet full of 70’s stuff now is the time to resurrect it but I’ll take a pass on this trend.
Military – This trend is still going strong. Influences can be seen in small details such as buttons, lapels, collars, pockets and cuffs. Dolce and Gabbana had some very cute military looks.
Accessories – Shoes – For all you shoe lovers out there the trends for spring are funky, colourful and strappy, from thigh high lace up sandals to kitten heels and casual but loud sneakers. Almost anything goes these days from wild stiletto designs to chunky or kitten heels and flats.
Handbags – The big news in handbags is the new circle shape bags seen everywhere on the runways. They are definitely very trendy and different…I’m not so sure how much they hold or how it stays organized but this is a fun trend that can totally update an old outfit if you have a limited budget.
Belts – The ‘judo’ type belt is the hot spring trend. Seen on everything from coats to skirts, tops and jackets.
Colour – The hottest colour for spring 2015 is yellow. Yes, you heard me, yellow! It was seen everywhere, even in men’s fashion in vibrant lemony hues and also mustards.
